Our purpose

The Wild Arts Collective (WAC) formed in 2023 with a shared goal: to use art as a clear, accessible way to spark conversations about the environment. We are eight Ottawa-based artists working in different mediums, united by the belief that creativity can move people toward practical, local action.

Our approach is grounded in the idea of “think global, act local.” We focus on issues that shape life in our city — like the protection of trees and greenspace, the risks of waste-to-energy incineration, and the shift toward renewable energy. We also engage with broader concerns such as single-use plastics, consumption habits, and the everyday choices that either harm or help the planet.

In the community

Most of our current pieces take the form of
2 × 3-foot posters, inspired by Bill McKibben’s insight that "the poster is where art meets organizing most powerfully." Our work aims to meet people where they are — in cafés, markets, and community spaces — and open a moment of reflection or curiosity.

Although our public pieces have been visual so far, our collective also includes musicians, and we plan to explore sound-based environmental work in upcoming projects.

Current and future plans

Our launch exhibit in September 2024 was at the Wild Oat Cafe on Bank Street.  Since then, we have shared our work in several venues and community events, including gallery cafés and neighbourhood gatherings. Our current exhibit is on display at the Happy Goat Coffee Co. at 317 Wilbrod St. in Sandy Hill and runs until the end of December 2025. Several additional exhibits across Ottawa are planned for the coming months, including a new series focused on reducing plastic use.

Part of the CAFES Ottawa Network

WAC recently joined the CAFES Ottawa network (Community Action for Environmental Sustainability) to collaborate with local groups who share our goals. We see this partnership as a way to strengthen environmental communication in Ottawa and to learn from the experience of others working toward a more sustainable future.

The Wild Arts Collective's posters are a powerful and inspiring way to engage with climate issues. Their art sparks important conversations and motivates action.
